No animator as such - just a guy who likes his animations clever, well-thought and (usually) anti-sprite. My mission? To give the good Newgrounds flash artists the fair, honest and constructive feedback.

CheesyPretzels

Introduction

Posted by CheesyPretzels Jan. 16, 2008 @ 2:12 PM EST

More and more, I've noticed my reviews getting longer and longer in length. This is a good thing. Recently, and with the new updated site, I've felt I also have that power to make a difference to the flashes themselves!

My vision is to become a top-class reviewer that gives that the constructive criticism every flash artist craves. I don't deal in comments like "That was freakin' awesome you should make teh more roflol!?!" . Newgrounds is a community, but that only works if the communication back to the artists is constructive criticism. My reviews will always be honest, descriptive and, hopefully helpful!

I've created this post so anyone who receives a review from me, can drop by and see what I'm about. At this point in time, i get responses from 25% of flash artists who i review (which I'm really chuffed about!). I reply to every e-mail, and will (probably!) never turn down a request to review a flash animation or game! *

*Ps. Note though, I will always be rating 1) sprite animations, 2) Sniper games, 3) stick animations, 4) CC, UZI or KK work.. MUCH more critically. It's not that these can't get a good review from me ("Akuma vs. Chameleon" was a clear favourite!), I just love seeing something creative and original!

Heh, I've been noticing my reviews get shorter and short lately, just can't think of new ways to comment on the music, probably due to the large ammounts of them I write. Anyhow, great seeing a quality reviewer amidst all the crappy oneliners around here. :)

i agree with pretty much everything you've said
it's sad that people forgot what a review is actually about and in what respects it differs from a (simple) comment
but don't forget one thing: quantity is not quality
writing a good review doesn't mean it to be a long one
if it gets too long not only the common-or-garden newgrounder won't bother reading it, but you also risk inattention from the author, especially at submissions with A LOT of reviews. the responses don't have to stay at 25%.

It's a good point you make. Sometimes I find myself talking about something for ages in a review, then thinking to myself, "does he really need to hear this?". More often than not my reviews are even longer, before i start chopping them down.

To keep myself in check, i always keep the same structure - Introduction, positive analysis, critical analysis, recommendation, conclusion. When one of those bits gets too big, i reel myself back in and try to think what the most helpful bits were...

However I never worry if at the end of the day after chopping it down, it's a massive review. Some authors on the front page get 200+ reviews and don't skim through to the 17th page to see my reply, but occassionally they do (I was chuffed to get a response in a similar scenario to my review for Barfquestion - he's one of my favourite flash artists!). And it's usually those great animations i've got the most to say about :-)
